Te Tiriti Waitangi belongs to our hapu (tribe) Ngati Rahiri.
Te Tiriti means The Treaty wherein on 6th February 1840 representatives of the British Crown and various Maori chiefs signed Te Tiriti o Waitangi to acknowledge the partnership of each culture and how they could live together.
Our Te Tiriti Waitangi brand is to commemorate the significance of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi as the signing and deliberations were conducted here on our Waitangi lands.
Three of our Tupuna chiefs; Te Kemara, Hone Heke and Marupo were signatories of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Hence our elders named our Marae Te Tiriti o Waitangi 1840 to commemorate this occasion and gifted the Marae to the people of Aotearoa (New Zealand).
Te Tiriti is one of many of our Waitangi stories that we would like to share with you.
